I am taking extra magnesium for several reasons, constipation avoidance, against heart speed-ups and because actually my Dr prescribed it. I got some "legal" ones from the UK and am doing fine and having good success with them. I also feel and act much calmer in general. I take 2 in the morning and 1 at night. And I take another if my heart seems to start feeling "fluttery" at any time. I'd have to go look at the bottle to tell you the dosage. I believe magnesium citrate was supposed to be the best for constipation, because it isn't really assimilated but apparently sits in the bowel and absorbs water. (anyone, jump in here if I don't recall this correctly) People mention often Nature's Calm, but I can't get that.

It has taken me a long time to realize the same is true for my husband. For various reasons, his diet within SCD is very limited. He cannot tolerate the nuts (which are high in magnesium), nor can he eat vegetables due to chewing/dental problems. But he does eat a lot of the yogurt and cheese. Therefore, he is high on calcium, but magnesium is almost non-existent. Sometimes he is very constipated because of this. Research is showing that many people need to take as much magnesium or even more than the amount of calcium they are taking, because the two need to be in balance. So, although the vast majority of people on SCD are getting a balanced diet, people need to be aware of the calcium-magnesium ratio depending on what foods they are actually eating. There are many types of magnesium, and many of the common ones can cause diarrhea. The two forms that do not are Magnesium Glycinate and Magnesium Taurate.

I think Elaine's biggest concern is that people go overboard with the minerals and take a whole bunch of one, while ignoring all the others, and that can throw the body out of whack. I take also the frieda vitamins to be sure I get some balance, I just increase the magnesium because it really does seem that I need it. t

Through the (SCD) Specific Carbohydrate Diet, explained in this book, our son was able to get off medication and thrive. He healed himself and was able to go away to college. Last month he had a relapse, had surgery and by going back on the diet he was able to put himself in remission. The doctors are amazed with his latest tests and told him he did not need medication, but he must stick to the diet. I have bought over a dozen of these books and shared them with doctors, family members, and friends. I strongly recommend this book for any IBD/IBS issues.
