RESULT OF RUSH UNIVERSITY SCD STUDY SHOWS THE DIET LEADS TO BETTER MICROBIAL GUT DIVERSITY!

Result of Rush University SCD study shows the diet leads to better microbial gut diversity!

January 23rd, 2014

The results of a recent Rush University study are now out. The work was conducted by Dr. Ece Mutlu and shows that use of the diet is associated with increased microbial diversity in the gut and improvment in patients on the SCD! The work was presented at the American College of Gastroenterology 2013 Annual Scientific Meeting (poster 1619). Dr. Mutlu says: “A longitudinal study following IBD patients before the start of the diet, and during and after the SCD, would have been much harder for us to complete, but I think this should be done going forward and it could help us learn a lot more in the future.” Here is a link to the article on Gastroenterology and Endoscopy News.

It sounds crazy but if you are a chronic sufferer of colitis, you will understand why I was so thrilled. I continued to follow the specific carbohydrate diet that Elaine has described in "Breaking the vicious cycle." Gradually all of my symptoms resolved over one year. For the last two years, I am completely symptom-free, back to my normal weight and pursue all of my activities including a busy medical practice.
